Bisecting the ranch is the upper Wind, a free flowing natural river dominated mostly by cutthroat trout; the MacKenzie Highlands Ranch controls nearly ¾ mile of excellent fishing for twelve to sixteen inchers and an occasional 18-inch bruiser. This section of the Wind River is often forgotten by anglers. It delivers excellent wade fishing opportunities in deep holes and riffles. Although this healthy fish population is dominated by cutthroats, brown trout and rainbows are commonly found. The setting of the MacKenzie Highlands Ranch provides one of the area’s most diverse wildlife viewing environments. Bordered on two sides by public lands and just miles from Shoshone Forest and Washakie Wilderness Area, it is no wonder why so many different species of wildlife call this area home. More notably are the ranch’s big game species that at any given time of the year may include elk, moose, Mule deer and antelope. Additionally, bear, mountain lion and wolves can be found on the property or in the nearby national forests. The MacKenzie Ranch has also been a historic calving grounds for the local elk herd and migration/winter grounds for elk and deer.
